The inventive solar-heated rocket engine comprises an electroheated thermal accumulator-heat exchanger (4) which is powered by a solar battery (1), tanks containing liquefied hydrogen (6) and oxygen (7), systems for supplying hydrogen and oxygen, an engine chamber, a compressor (10) and a receiver of gaseous hydrogen (11), an oxygen gasifier (12) and an receiver of gaseous oxygen provided with an electroheater. The inventive operating method of the solar-heated rocket engine working in a mode of burning "cold" and "hot" hydrogen and in a mode using "hot" hydrogen without burning it is characterised in that the firings of an engine and the operation thereof in all modes are carried out by supplying gaseous hydrogen and oxygen to the chamber of the engine (5) and in that the hydrogen evaporated in the tank because of external heat gains is pumped out from the tank (6) with the aid of the compressor (10) to the hydrogen receiver (11) and used for firing the engine. During the operation of the engine, the hydrogen can be supplied from the receiver (11) to the chamber (5) of the engine together with the liquefied hydrogen which is taken from the tank (6) and - prior to the supply to the engine chamber is successively passed through a cooling circuit of the engine chamber (5), the oxygen gasifier (12) and the thermal accumulator-heat exchanger (4).
