PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate contractive retraction of a piston. SOLUTION: A cartridge type tensioner 10 is provided with a cylinder 12, a piston 14 received in a cylinder hole 23 of a cylinder 12 in a freely slidable manner, a vent device 16 received in a piston hole 40 of the piston 14 in a freely slidable manner and having an end part 44 and a stem 46 united therewith, a pressure spring 18 acting between the shoulder of the cylinder 12 and the vent device 16, and a retaining device 20 operational from the outside of the cylinder 12 for the vent device. The retaining device 20 holds the vent device 16 at an engagement position where engaging with the stem 46 of the vent device 16 to prevent spring force from acting on a piston 14, and makes the spring force act on the piston 14 at a non-engagement position where it is separated from the stem 46 of the vent device 16.
