PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve machining grade and machining speed by securely detecting a short-circuit state in fine electric discharge machining with a narrow discharge voltage pulse width. SOLUTION: In this fine discharge machining method, continuity between a first continuity breaking element 6 to break continuity between a discharge power source 3 and an electrode 1 and a second continuity breaking element 7 to break continuity between the discharge power source 3 and a workpiece 2 is broken at a prescribed timing by a control part 8, and discharge pulses are applied between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2 for electric discharge machining. Continuity between a detection power source 9 separate from the discharge power source 3 and the electrode 1 is broken at a prescribed timing by a third continuity breaking element 10 to provide detection pulses to be applied between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2. By measuring a current flowing between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2 by the detection pulses, the short-circuit state between the electrode 1 and the workpiece 2 is detected.
