PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a thin cast slab excellent in the surface characteristic by preventing the development of crack and scum flaw on the surface of the cast slab and uneven brightness on a product plate caused by entrapment of the scum in a casting of the thin cast slab with a twin-drum type continuous casting system. SOLUTION: In the twin-drum type continuous casting system, with which molten steel is poured into a molten steel pool part formed with respective parts of the peripheral surfaces of the cooling drums and side weirs and successively, the thin cast slab is continuously cast while cooling and solidifying this molten steel with the rotated peripheral surfaces of the cooling drums, gas, such as N<SB>2</SB>gas for lowering the surface tension of the molten steel is jetted to near the contacting part between the drum surfaces and the molten steel surface. Further, reducing gas, such as H<SB>2</SB>gas, CO gas, for raising the surface tension of the molten steel is jetted on the molten metal surface at a position apart from the drums. In this way, the surface flow from the drums to the apart position, is generated and the entrapment of the scum is prevented by moving the scum from the drums. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
