An image reader (2150) for optically reading an image on a medium by means of manual operations comprising: a reading unit (107) for optically reading the image according to prespecified conditions for reading; a read start detecting unit (2152) for detecting start of reading of an image on the medium; and a read condition deciding unit (2153) for deciding the conditions for reading when the start of reading of the image is detected by said read start detecting unit (2152). In this way, a reduction in read quality due to fading or distortion is prevented.
