PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traveling vehicle detector capable of improving reliability in a method for detecting a traveling vehicle by applying a certainty degree to data acquired in a good environment and preventing data acquired in a bad environment from being handled. SOLUTION: In the traveling vehicle detector for measuring a traveling vehicle speed and a position by means of an image sensor, this device has an input means for image signal, a average lightness calculating means for image, a edge calculating means for average edge strength, a speed/position detecting means for traveling automobile, a certainty degree calculating means for calculating the certainty degree of the processing result from the outputs of the lightness calculating means and the edge calculating means, a deciding means for performing a decision from the certainty degree calculated by the certainty degree calculating means and the speed/position information calculated by the speed/position detecting means, and a presenting means for presenting output information decided by the deciding means to a driver.
