PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an vacant ring-holding device wherein a vacant ring section extending from a needle location part can be made shorter, and also, the vibration of a member for holding the vacant ring section can be suppressed. SOLUTION: A vacant ring which remains after the completion of a sewing motion of a preceding cloth is cut by a vacant ring-cutting means. The vacant ring section extending to the needle location part of the cut vacant ring is being held by a vacant ring-holding means, and the vacant ring section can be sewn into a following cloth. The vacant ring-cutting means which plays one role of such a series of vacant ring-cutting-holding motions is provided in a manner to be adjacent to a throat plate which pinches the cloth by cooperating with a presser foot in an approximately vertical direction to the feeding direction of the cloth. Thus, by providing the vacant ring-cutting means not on the upstream side in the feeding direction of the cloth but being adjacent to the throat plate in the approximately vertical direction to the feeding direction of the cloth, a distance between the needle location part and the vacant ring-cutting means can be made as small as possible.
