PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform printing while making a switch between bi-directional printing and uni-directional printing at any time depending on data to be printed. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder for recording an image on a recording medium using a recording head having a plurality of ink ejection openings comprises a recording medium carrier, a carriage for moving a recording head in the direction of scanning line, and a buffer memory for storing recording data wherein switching is made between bi-directional printing and uni-directional printing at any time depending on the print data.
