PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat ray shielding material which comprises layers in economically realizable numbers, is useful for the suppression of the increase of indoor temperature by shielding sun beams that enter the inside of a building or a vehicle through window glasses, and is excellent in transparency. SOLUTION: This heat ray shielding material comprises a transparent base plate and an optical multi-layer film which comprises six layers or more of low refraction factor film layers and high refraction factor film layers alternately laminated on the surface of the transparent base plate. The heat ray shielding material satisfies the following conditions. 1. A major substance which constitutes the low refraction factor film layer is a transparent medium. 2. A major substance which constitutes the high refraction factor film layer is a transparent medium. 3. The low refraction factor film layer has a refraction factor of 1.40 or lower. 4.
