PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which enables satisfactory secondary transfer even in the case that the linear velocity of the external surface of an intermediate transfer belt varies due to dimensional inaccuracy or elastic deformation or displacement occurs in a nip plane between backup rollers and a secondary transfer roller. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer belt 3 is stretched round a drive roller 3a, a tension roller 3b, and the backup rollers 3c, 3d, and 3e. The secondary transfer is carried out with the backup roller 3d and the secondary transfer roller 4. The intermediate transfer belt 3 when moved through the secondary transfer part is held so as to form a substantially flat plane with the backup rollers 3c, 3d, and 3e. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
