PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the processing time of image read processing wherein main scanning is performed after prescanning. SOLUTION: An image reader 10 performs prescanning in a going path 20a of a carriage 20 and performs main scanning in a return path 20b. Thus the processing time is shortened because processing to return the carriage 20 to an initial state position is omitted. In the main scanning, a document size and a document type are discriminated on the basis of document information acquired by prescanning, and a read range and an image processing method, etc., are set.
