PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for preparing desired air-permeating zones 62 and 64 in a covering material 60 for a rod-shaped article, particularly in the tobacco-processing industry in which beam guide devices 50, 52 and 54 for focusing a beam 38 produced by a beam source 37 on the covering material 60 in order to form the perforated zones 62 and 64 and a multiple beam generating device for forming multiple beams 39 from the beam 38 and an optical splitter are provided. SOLUTION: This device comprises the multiple beam-generating device equipped with only one optical and at least one member 80 in which the operating position relatively to the beam 38 is immobile. In the diffractive optical member 80, the beam 38 is divided into partial beams 39-I and 39-II diverging at a mutual angle for forming the multiple beams 39. The optical splitter 100 is composed so as to generate each of the partial beams 46 and 48 as the multiple beams 39.
