PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform adequate plotting of an image in an image recorder for recording an image by using a diffraction grating type photodecomposition element. SOLUTION: In this image recorder, the transition of the photodecomposition element from the 'OFF' state to the 'ON' state is detected. When the transition is detected, an auxiliary driving voltage V3 set in the range between a driving voltage V1 for making the photodecomposition element to be in the 'ON' state and a driving voltage V2 for making it to be in the 'OFF' state is temporally applied to the photodecomposition element. As a result, it is possible to suppress the sudden transition of the photodecomposition element to the 'ON' state so that the plotting of an image with an adequate line space can be realized.
