The device for the attaching of carrying handles of optional material to containers (3) of all types has an application head installed on a X-Y positioning unit (8) combined with a flexible element such as a toothed belt, for example. The application head through the X-Y positioning unit is movable in and out between spaced containers. The application head has a sensor to record the spacing of the next container. The application head has at least one device for the applying of a liquid or hot liquid adhesive. The application head also has a cutting device and a gripper. An independent claim is included for a method for the attaching of carrying handles to containers.
