CODONOPSIS LANCEOLATA EXTRACT AND COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME FOR SUPPRESSING OBESITY

PURPOSE: A composition containing a Codonopsis lanceolata extract having a pharmacological effect on obesity is provided. The composition inhibits digestion of carbohydrates by inhibiting alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase enzyme activity and the quick increase of blood glucose level and is thus used for the prevention and treatment of obesity. CONSTITUTION: An anti-obesity composition contains a Codonopsis lanceolata extract as an effective ingredient. The Codonopsis lanceolata extract is obtained by extracting the leaves, roots and stems of Codonopsis lanceolata(Sieb. et Zucc.) Trautv. in water or an organic solvent. For an example, Leaves, roots and stems of Codonopsis lanceolata are dried, ground and extracted in 10 times of methanol for 12hr two times, concentrated to remove the solvent then freeze-dried. About 2 to 5% by weight of Codonopsis lanceolata powder is mixed with AIN-76 feed and then fed to a Sprague-Dawley rat(200 to 250g). The Sprague-Dawley rat test showed a suppressing effect on obesity after being fed for 4 weeks.
