PURPOSE: A method of controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor is provided to stably drive a motor in overload of the motor by more raising driving frequency than a rated operating frequency and compensating magnetic flux produced by an electric current and a magnet. CONSTITUTION: A method of controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor comprises steps of performing load operation with operating frequency according to rated load(ST2); comparing the present load and the reference load and deciding overload(ST3); and increasing the present operating frequency to the predetermined level and performing overload operation if the deciding result is overload(ST4,ST5). The method of controlling operation of the reciprocating compressor further comprises a step of raising the voltage of a motor to a predetermined level, to compensate stroke reduction caused by increasing the operating frequency in overload operation(ST6).
