FIELD: heat- protection materials. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to manufacture of high temperature-resistant alumina-based fiber tolerating long-time operation at 1600 C for use as furnace lining materials and making parts of aircrafts with elevated temperature resistance. Method comprises preparing alumina-based fiber-forming solution and treating fiber-forming solution to form fibers followed by multistage firing: first heating fibers to volatiles removal temperature at velocity 20-600oC/h, then heating fibers to mullite formation temperature at velocity 60-1000oC/h, performing diffusion isothermal pause at that temperature during 0.1 to 40 h, further heating fibers to temperature, at which mullite crystallizing nuclei are formed, at velocity 500-1500oC/h, performing second isothermal pause for 0.1 to 3 h, and cooling fibers to ambient temperature. EFFECT: enhanced heat resistance, improved mechanical and thermal characteristics ensuring long-term operation at 1600 C. 4 cl, 3 tbl, 4 ex
