PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader in which the read start of the next stationary original can be quickened by setting the next stationary original without waiting that an illumination light source is completely moved to a book reading type starting position when an operator is to read the next stationary original. SOLUTION: The original reader for reading the stationary original (S34) is provided with a means for displaying that the next stationary original can be read (S40) when the illumination light source starts an action for returning to the read starting position of the stationary original (S36) after the stationary original is read (S34).
