PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect the mode of an OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) signal, guard interval length, effective symbol length or the like. SOLUTION: A symbol synchronizing part 16 consists of: a first detector 40<SB>1</SB>, a second detector 40<SB>2</SB>and a third detector 40<SB>3</SB>for detecting a received OFDM signal x(n); a logical AND element 41 for performing an AND operation of detected signals v<SB>1</SB>(n), v<SB>2</SB>(n) and v<SB>3</SB>(n) outputted from the detectors 40<SB>1</SB>to 40<SB>3</SB>and outputting a logic signal AV; and a determination circuit 42 for generating and outputting a synchronous timing signal T<SB>0</SB>by using the logic signal AV. The symbol synchronizing part 16 has a function for detecting the mode of the received OFDM signal x(n) out of three kinds of modes (mode 1, mode 2 and mode 3) and detecting the start point of each symbol, guard interval length, effective symbol length or the like.
