PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic automatic tensioner which properly meets an abrupt increase and decrease of tension of a transmitting member and always assuredly transmits a driving force. SOLUTION: The hydraulic automatic tensioner is used in a driving force transmitting mechanism. In the device, an auxiliary machine of an internal combustion engine is driven by an endless transmitting member. One of faced members is fixed, and the other of the faced members acts on the transmitting member to adjust the tension of the transmitting member. Both the faced members 11 and 12 are urged to separate directions from each other by elastic members 15. A hydraulic chamber 14 is formed by the combination of a piston 16 and a cylinder 17 formed integrally respectively with both the faced members 11 and 12. An oil storing chamber 13 for storing oil is provided, and a leak passage 20 is formed through which the oil with which the hydraulic chamber 14 is filled leaks to the oil storing chamber 13. In the leak passage 20, a check valve 21 is provided for interrupting the flow of oil from the hydraulic chamber 14 to the oil storing chamber 13. A control member 22 is provided in which upon operation, the check valve 21 operates, and upon no operation, the function of the check valve 21 is stopped to allow the oil storing chamber 13 to communicate with the hydraulic chamber 14.
