PURPOSE: An error correcting device and a method thereof are provided to determine the existence of demodulation error signal and correct PI error by generating erase polynomial by a PI decoder according to a demodulation error signal. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup/high frequency processing part(200) reproduces data recorded on an optical disc and outputs reproducing data in NRZ format. A demodulation/error signal generating part(210) demodulates the reproducing data and generates a demodulation error signal in response to error generation. A PI decoder(220) generates an eraser polynomial according to the demodulation error signal to carry out PI error correction for the eraser polynomial by an initial value of an error position polynomial for generating a PI decoding data. The PI error signal is generated when the PI error is not corrected. A PO decoder(230) corrects PO error for the eraser polynomial with the initial value of the error position polynomial for generating a PO decoding data. The PO error signal is generated when the PO error is not corrected. A descrambler(240) descrambles the PO decoding data according to the PO error signal. An EDC checking part(250) checks the existence of EDC error in an output signal from the descrambler for EDC correction. The EDC error signal is generated when the EDC correction is not carried out. A data output part(260) outputs an output signal from the EDC checking part as the reproducing data of the optical disc.
