PURPOSE: A method for discriminating a defect area of an optical recorder and a method for managing the defect are provided to distinguish a defect area of which defect is serious according to the degree of the defect, thereby preventing the waste of a substitution area for the effective use of an optical disc. CONSTITUTION: A method for discriminating a defect area of an optical recorder includes the steps of deciding an error-generating area as a presumed defect area when the error is generated during data reproducing(S312), checking the generation defects in the presumed defect area by reducing the reproducing speed(S309-S310), and deciding the presumed defect area as a defect area if the errors are continuously checked(S307).
