Workpiece clamp for motor vehicle assembly robot has housing with centering guide and retractable locking grip to engage work

The workpiece clamp has a mechanical section (12) connected to a hydraulic actuator (14). The mechanical section has a housing (16) with a centering guide (56) extending from the housing and surrounding a retractable gripper (58) which locks the workpiece in place. The gripper can move between an extended use position and a retracted position in which it is recessed into the housing. When extended it engages a seating in the workpiece to hold it.
