PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for formatting a memory medium of a medium exchange type memory device capable of reducing the labor for the physical format processing of the memory medium. SOLUTION: The physical format processing is automatically started when the memory medium 7 not subjected to the physical format processing is set in the medium exchange type memory device 7 and therefore an effect of drastically reducing the labor of a user is obtained.
