PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk drive, of which the processing time required for the recording or reproducing operation is reducible as to a data area whereon the alternating process due to the defect is not included. SOLUTION: The flag showing whether the alternative process is carried out or not with respect to a data area DAn, is recorded for every data area DAn to make out (S10) an alternating flag table on an unused area of a read-in area of the optical disk and this alternating flag table is referred to (S2) at the information recording or reproducing operation, and by deciding (S3) whether a defect control table is to be retrieved or not, the retrieval of the defect control table is not required (S6) for the data area DAn whereon the alternating process due to the defect is not included, then the processing time required for the recording or reproducing operation is reduced.
