PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative image recording material adaptable to a heat mode for forming a lithographic printing plate excellent in printing durability (the number of sheets printable) in which ablation by laser scanning during recording is suppressed, an image of high picture quality having no contamination in a non-image part can be formed, and the formed image part has high strength. SOLUTION: The recording material contains (A) a polymer compound having at least one kind of structural unit expressed by general formula (1), (2) or (3) by≥0.1 mol% and <30 mol%, soluble or swellable with water or an alkaline aqueous solution, (B) a photothermal converting agent, and (C) a compound which generates a radical by exposure to light at the wavelength the photothermal converting agent absorbs the light. The material can form an image by heat-mode exposure. In formulae, each of A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>and A<SP>3</SP>represents oxygen atom, sulfur atom or -N(R<SP>21</SP>)-, wherein R<SP>21</SP>represents an alkyl group, each of G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP>and G<SP>3</SP>represents a divalent organic group, each of X and Z represents oxygen atom, sulfur atom or the like, Y represents oxygen atom, sulfur atom, phenylene group or the like, and each of R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>20</SP>represents a monovalent organic group.
