PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the installation of an optical pickup device or an optical disk drive on a notebook computer, etc., by attaining the power saving of the optical pickup device or the optical disk drive without greatly changing the basic circuit configuration such as a light receiving element. SOLUTION: Amplifier built-in light receiving elements HOE1, HOE2, FSPD1 and FSPD2 have a power source lines and a signal line controlled by an external control signal. The reference voltage line 16 serving as the signal line supplies an operating midpoint voltage Vref to all the elements in common. The power consumption of the elements HOE1, HOE2, FSPD1 and FSPD2 is reduced by turning on a switching device 18 through the external control signal in power saving mode, and connecting and dropping the signal line = the reference voltage line for the midpoint voltage Vref to the ground (GND).
