PURPOSE: A flat color cathode ray tube is provided to achieve improved uniformity of luminance all over the screen by preventing the non-uniformity of luminance caused due to the variance of thicknesses between the center and periphery of the panel. CONSTITUTION: A flat color cathode ray tube comprises a panel(5) having a size ratio of 4:3 in a horizontal to vertical direction, wherein the panel has a flat outer surface and an inner surface with a predetermined curvature. The panel has an outer surface coated with a coating film(50). The panel has a center to periphery thickness ratio of 180%, and the coating film has a transmittance(Td) measured at the point spaced apart, in d(n)mm in a diagonal direction, from the center of the panel. The transmittance satisfies a formula 2.2n+54.0<=Td<=2.2n+64.0, wherein d(n)=61n, and n is zero or an integer larger than zero.
