<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor control device that reduces vibration and noise of a stepping motor by applying an input current having an optimum waveform corresponding to a drive condition, and to provide an image reader using the device. <P>SOLUTION: The motor control device comprises constant current drive means (63, 84, and 85) that apply input currents having certain magnitudes to phases of the stepping motor 61 by chopping control; a damped waveform switching means (64) that switches low-speed attenuation and high-speed attenuation at prescribed timing during the attenuations corresponding to set voltages when the input current is damped by the chopping control; and predetermined voltage apply means (81, 82, 83 and 86) that apply the predetermined voltages to the damped waveform switching means.
