PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance rendering of a compound image containing text, line art and/or halftone data. SOLUTION: By utilizing high possibility for a pixel (orphan pixel) having a value different from all surrounding pixels to be included in a raster image obtained from an image containing the halftone, an pixel with such an orphan pixel existent closely is judged as a halftone image and when not existence, the pixel is judged as a text/line art image. When the pixel is judged as the text/line art, resolution enhancement techniques such as edge smoothing can be applied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
