PURPOSE: An oral hygiene composition containing chlorite ions encapsulated in a liposome and zinc ions is provided. The composition can extend the remaining time of chlorite ions which can chemically decompose volatile sulfur compounds within the oral cavity and causes no reaction with other components and thus has excellent effect on prevention and treatment of gingivitis, calculus, periodontal disease and bad breath. CONSTITUTION: An oral hygiene composition contains 0.03 to 0.5 parts by weight of chlorite ions encapsulated in a liposome having a size of 10 to 200nm and 0.001 to 0.02% by weight of zinc ions. The composition can additionally contain one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers or excipients selected from the group consisting of surfactants, humectants, flavor components, sweeteners, alkali metal bicarbonates, water, antiphlogistics, coloring materials, antibacterial preparations and anticalculus agents. The composition also has a double phase structure or a single phase structure and a pH of 7 to 8.5.
