PURPOSE: A method for preparing 2,6-naphathalene dicarboxylic acid having a high purity is provided to save the cost needed for a catalyst and to increase the reaction speed. CONSTITUTION: The method for preparing 2,6-naphathalene dicarboxylic acid comprises the step of oxidizing dimethyl naphthalene by molecular oxygen in a solvent such as water, alkanol and acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst containing cobalt, manganese and bromine. The method is characterized in that the oxidation reaction is performed in the presence of a catalyst obtained by using cobalt bromide and manganese bromide as the precursors for cobalt and manganese at the temperature of 180 to 220 deg.C so that the yield of 2,6-formylnaphthoic acid can be decreased to 1.0% or less.
