PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pump hydraulic turbine operating method capable of reducing pump input by more quickly pushing a water level of the water filled in a runner chamber downward when operating the pump for shutoff operation. SOLUTION: In this pump hydraulic turbine operating method, when operating the pump for shutoff operation after full closing guide vanes 23, 23, etc., intake air is supplied to a runner chamber 33 from a head part and a bottom part thereof.
