The device has a signal processing unit (3) connected to a metabolic current volume signal acquiring unit. The processing unit has a detection unit (10) to detect regular respiration at rest by comparing a metabolic current volume signal with a rest value. The processing unit is adapted to control a communication unit so that the communication unit transmits a signal representative of a set point if the unit (3) detects regular respiration at rest. An independent claim is also included for an assembly formed of a self-monitoring device and a control unit adapted for controlling the irradiation of an individual by a radiotherapy unit.
