PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress knocking noises (unusual noises) generated just after starting an engine, and to provide a valve timing adjusting device with excellent controllability. SOLUTION: A pressure discharge passage 24 communicating with the atmosphere on the central side of a device is formed in the inner periphery of each delay angle side hydraulic chamber 10 through a communication groove 25 having a rectangular cross section, formed in one side face (not shown) of a cover 4 which is a component of a first rotor 1, and one side face 6c of a boss part 6a of a rotor 6 slidably contacting therewith along the radial direction, and communicating with the atmosphere on the central side of the device. The width and the depth of the communication groove 25 of the pressure discharge passage 24 are determined in a range where air easily escapes and oil hardly escapes. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
