PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and general method for producing 4-alkyl-5- formylthiazole derivative in high yield by overcoming problems in the conventional production process. SOLUTION: In the production process for 4-alkyl-5-formylthiazole derivative represented by general formula (2) (R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-4C alkyl; R<SP>2</SP>is H or an amino group which may be substituted), 4-alkyl-5-hydroxymethylthiazole derivative represented by general formula (1) [R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each identical in the formula (2)] is subjected to the oxidation reaction in a two-phase solvent system of a high water-solubility carboxylic ester or ketone solvent and an aqueous solution in the presence of an N-oxyl compound.
