PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary kiln that can prolong the life of a refractory by efficiently cooling the refractory without requiring treatment of degradation of a shell and steam. SOLUTION: A first space defining member 35 and a second space defining member 45 both fixedly disposed annularly define a first space 33 and a second space 43 respectively against a cylinder 10. Cooling pipes 20 in the cylinder 10 and the first space 33, and the cooling pipes 20 and the second space 43 are interconnected respectively via first communicating portions 15 and second communicating portions 16 opening respectively in a surface of the cylinder 10 defining the first space 33 and a surface defining the second space 43. Even when the cylinder 10 is rotated, a cooling medium flows through the first space 33, the first communicating portions 15, the cooling pipes 20, the second communicating portions 16 and the second space 43 in this order smoothly without leakage to cool the cylinder 10 appreciably.
