PURPOSE: A method for stopping a disc by discriminating a disc size without a disc rpm detecting sensor is provided to remove an FG sensor from an optical disc system and minimize the optical disc system with the decrease of the manufacturing cost. CONSTITUTION: A method for stopping a disc by discriminating a disc size without a disc rpm detecting sensor includes the steps of positioning an optical pickup between a radius of a 8cm disc and a radius of a 12cm disc, detecting a focus error signal by radiating a beam from the optical pickup to determine a 12cm disc is inserted if the error is detected, moving the optical pickup into the radius of the 8cm disc to detect the focus error signal, and determining a 8cm disc is inserted or any disc is not inserted according to the detection result.
