PURPOSE: An electronic payment system and a method for operating the same are provided to remove a mistrust with respect to an electronic commerce by preventing personal information and credit card information of a consumer from being managed in a shopping mall. CONSTITUTION: A virtual card managing server(27) is connected to a plurality of user terminals(23) and card company servers(25) through an Internet network(21). The virtual card managing server(27) controls an execution of a user authentication and a card usage approval for a virtual card usage and payment of a user. A user DB(29a) stores various kinds of information necessary for using the virtual card such as card information, personal information, destination information, or certificate information of a user. A member company DB(29b) includes information of a member company such as a card company and a merchant. A transaction details DB(29c) stores transaction details information according as a user uses a card. A user authentication module(27a) executes a user authentication procedure and issues a certificate. A card usage approval intermediation module(27b) transmits card usage approval request information and transmits an encoded approval number to a user terminal. A process module(27c) supplies destination information, an approval number, and an interactive authentication value to a merchant server.
