PURPOSE: An interface device between ATM multi layers and a method therefor are provided to enable an interface between a UTOPIA level2 ATM mode and a UTOPIA level1 ATM mode, or to enable an interface between the UTOPIA level2 ATM mode and a UTOPIA level1 PHY(Physical) mode, thereby reducing hardware cost. CONSTITUTION: An interface processor(100) receives a polling signal from a UTOPIA level2 ATM mode(1), receives a state confirmation signal from a UTOPIA level1 ATM mode(2), transmits each polling response signal to the UTOPIA level2 ATM mode(1) and the UTOPIA level1 ATM mode(2), and transmits data transmitting/receiving approval signals. A shared memory(200) connected to the UTOPIA level2 ATM mode(1) and the UTOPIA level1 ATM mode(2) receives the data transmitting/receiving approval signals, buffers data transceived between the UTOPIA level2 ATM mode(1) and the UTOPIA level1 ATM mode(2), and transmits a state report signal to the interface processor(100).
