<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device attaining both improvement of luminance of a projected image and suppression of temperature rise of a liquid crystal display element and a polarizing element and being realized by compact and simple construction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with the liquid crystal display element 2 for converting light from a light source into an optical signal expressing an image corresponding to a drive signal, a projecting optical system 1 for projecting the optical signal to a target to be projected, an exit side polarizing element 3b, a holding member 6 for fixing and holding respective elements together with the liquid crystal display element 2, a cooling medium 5 for cooling, an incident side polarizing element 3a and a first optical element 1a constituting the projecting optical system. The liquid crystal display element 2, the first optical element 1a and the holding member 6 constitute space between the liquid crystal display element 2 and the first optical element 1a.
