PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk like magnetic recording medium wherein electromagnetic transducing characteristics, particularly high-density recording characteristics are improved and excellent characteristics can be exhibited in all sizes of the medium, when reproduction is performed by using an MR head. SOLUTION: The disk like magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer formed by dispersing ferromagnetic metal fine powder or ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite fine powder in a binder on a substrate of polyethylene terephthalate is characterized in that the magnetic layer of the disk like magnetic recording medium has≤5 nm center plane average surface roughness, the thickness of the disk has≤3% fluctuation and the relation represented by 0.3≤Y/X≤1.0 between the whole thickness Xμm and the outside diameter Y mm of the disk is formed.
