PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably avoid excessive rise of the temperature of a cooling medium when electrically controlling the amount of circulation of the cooling medium with an electrically heatable thermostat valve. SOLUTION: Cooling water circulated in an engine 2 flows into a cooling passage 10 and by-pass passages 20, 22. The cooling passage 10 is provided with a radiator 12 which cools the cooling water. The cooling passage 10 and the by-pass passages 20, 22 are connected with an electronic thermostat 30, and the cooling water flowing out from the electronic thermostat 30 is supplied to the engine 2 through an inlet passage 40. The electronic thermostat 30 controls flow rates of the cooling water flowing into the inlet passage 40 through the cooling passage 10 and the cooling water flowing into the inlet passage 40 through the by-pass passages 20, 22 by a switching action. The electronic thermostat is applied with an electric current when the cooling water temperature exceeds a prescribed value and the gradient of the cooling water temperature exceeds a prescribed threshold.
