PURPOSE: A method for managing a sequence number for packet data transmission in updating the route between a network and a mobile terminal in GPRS(General Packet Radio Services) is provided to efficiently manage sequence numbers and to offer a simple message processing procedure. CONSTITUTION: If a route is updated(201), a network(20) transmits a routing area update accept message to a GMM(GPRS Mobility Management) layer(11) with the sequence number of the data packets transmitted/received through the previous route(203). The GMM layer(11) inputs the sequence number, contained in the routing area update accept message, to a sequence number table in accordance with a relevant NSAPI(Network Service Access Identifier)(205). Then the GMM layer(11) transmits a sequence number received message to inform an SM(Session Management) layer(13) that the sequence number has been received(207). The SM layer(13), receiving the sequence number received message, transmits the message to an SNDCP(SubNetwork Dependent Convergence Protocol) layer(15)(209). Receiving the sequence number received message, the SNDCP layer(15) searches the sequence number table for a necessary NSAPI sequence number and transmits the packet data of the next number of the searched sequence number to an LLC(Logical Link Control) layer(17)(211). The LLC layer(17), an RLC(Radio Link Control) layer(19), and a MAC(Media Access Control) layer(21) process the received packet data and transmits the processed data to the network(20) through an RF(Radio Frequency) part(23)(213).
