<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably provide a liquid crystal display device of a vertical alignment mode wherein contrast viewed from an oblique direction is practically highly maintained, and coloring and gradation loss are suppressed within a permissible range. <P>SOLUTION: A positive uniaxial film 14 having Rp [nm] retardation in the planar direction is disposed between a liquid crystal cell 11 of a vertical alignment mode and a polarizing plate 12, and a negative uniaxial film 15 having Rn [nm] retardation in the thickness direction is disposed between the liquid crystal cell 11 and a polarizing plate 13. When each retardation value in the thickness direction of triacetyl cellulose films 12b and 13b of the polarizing plates 12 and 13 is defined as Rtac [nm] and a parameter α1 [nm] concerned with the Rp and a parameter β1 [nm] concerned with the Rn are defined as 135-0.7×Rtac and Rlc-65-1.4×Rtac, respectively, the Rp is set to 80 to 120% of α1 and the Rn is set to 60 to 90% of β1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
