PURPOSE: An elevator apparatus is provided to achieve improved operating reliability of a speed governor, while allowing for ease of installation and replacement and reducing costs. CONSTITUTION: An elevator apparatus comprises an elevator car(300) connected to a main rope(200) wound on a winding machine installed in a machine room; a guide rail(400) mounted in the path for movement of the elevator car, and which guides a vertical movement of the elevator car; an emergency brake unit(500) contacting the guide rail, and which stops the elevator car upon occurrence of emergency; and a speed governor(700) including an operating sheave, a pole and a ratchet(760), and which cuts off a power of the winding machine and operates the emergency brake unit when an abnormal operation of the elevator car is detected. The speed governor is mounted at a side of the elevator car, and an auxiliary sheave(800) is mounted at the side surface of the speed governor. A speed governor rope(100) has a top fixed on the upper portion of path for movement of the elevator car and a bottom fixed on a tension weight(900) arranged in the lower portion of the path for movement of the elevator. The speed governor rope is wound on the operating sheave and the auxiliary sheave of the speed governor. The tension weight is link-coupled to the lower portion of the guide rail, and an operating rope(770) connected to the ratchet of the speed governor is connected to a link member connected to the emergency brake unit.
