The seat back, comprising a rigid frame (4), padding (6) over the front part of the frame, and a covering layer (7) e.g. of fabric, leather or plastic, has a flexible reinforcing panel (11) in its inner cavity (10) between the frame and a rear covering layer (8). The panel, fitted with one or more transverse plastic reinforcing strips, is tensioned and fixed to the frame, which has two side uprights connected by top and bottom cross-members. The top cross-member is fitted with head rest supporting tubes passing through holes in the top of the panel, which is made e.g. from woven or non-woven textile fibres in the form of a mat.
