PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalyst capable of decomposing environmental pollutants including nitrogen oxides in high efficiency in the light of a wide wavelength region. SOLUTION: The photocatalyst is composed of quartz crystal fine particles which are treated with hydrogen fluoride and have <100μm average particle size. The quartz crystal fine particle can be deposited on granular inorganic or organic matter. The photocatalyst being a fine particle can be dispersed in various resins and used as a coating agent. The wavelength region of the light when the photocatalyst can decompose environmental pollutants effectively is 200-800 nm. The organic environmental pollutants other than nitrogen oxides can also be decomposed. The quartz crystal to be used is desirably an artificial quartz crystal. Gaseous or liquid hydrogen fluoride can be used when quartz crystal fine particles are treated. An aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid is desirably used. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
