According to the invention, a fine capillary tube (10) is filled with the substance (14). The lower surface (22) of the capillary tube touches the substrate (20) at a defined speed and the substance, which forms a suspended meniscus (18) beyond the lower surface of the capillary tube, wets the substrate. The substance spreads out between the lower surface of the capillary tube and the substrate, propelled by the capillary force. A spot with a shape and size that correspond to the lower surface of the capillary tube is thus formed on the substrate. This permits extremely uniform arrays of small, shape-defining spots to be applied to a substrate. The spotting method is suitable for the construction of organic displays and biochips. |
