Hair-coloring compositions comprise at least one 1,3-diaminobenzene coupler of formula (1), wherein R is a moiety selected from formulae (2), (3) or (4) wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each independently selected from a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, an amino group, a C1-C4 alkyl or haloalkyl group, a C1-C4 alkoxy or haloalkoxy group, and a nitrile group, in combination with one or more primary intermediates of Formula (5) wherein R6 and R7 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a C1 to C4 alkyl group, a C2 to C4 hydroxyalkyl group, a benzyl group or a phenyl group, and R8 is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a C1 to C4 alkyl group, or a C2 to C4 hydroxyalkyl group, or the physiologically tolerated, water-soluble salts thereof.
